And this is it -- http://www.advocatemag.com/oak-cliff/blog. It's part of the magazine's switch to a new, updated, and all around spiffier website that debuts on Monday.
The new website includes current and archived issues of the magazine, local photos and videos, and more neighborhood listings (restaurants, businesses, garage sales, and events among them) than I thought humanly possible.
The new blog will have all of the features that the old one had, plus a variety of new things that you asked for. We're adding a users' guide, search function, more streamlined subscription options, top post listings, and an easier interface. We will continue to add requested features throughout the next couple of months, so if you don't see something you think we should have, let us know.
We will also be adding advertising, both to the blog and the website. I can guarantee that we won't have any pop-up or drop-down ads, and that we will add them in as user-friendly a manner as possible. If you're interested in in advertising on the blog or the web site, you can also let us know.
So what do you need to do to make the switch?
I don’t get a chance to write too many feature stories for the magazine, so I pick the ones I do based on how much fun I'll have doing them. And the September story about neighborhood chefs was tremendous fun.
Those of us who cook (and, come to think of it, those of us who don’t) assume chefs are larger than life, cooking superstars who never make a mistake and who can whip up a cream sauce in less time than it takes everyone else to open a can of soup.
Which is about as far from the truth as possible. If Tony Romo throws interceptions, then chefs –- even the biggest and best known –– do the culinary equivalent. This month’s magazine details Oak Cliff chefs (all of whom were incredibly gracious with their time), but I talked to chefs throughout Dallas, including some of the most famous. And all of them had great accident stories to tell:
September's Advocate CliffDweller story "Movin' Right Along" gives an update on Oak Cliff's trolley quest and the city vault find by Jason Roberts and Luis Salcedo that might speed up the process. I talked to Roberts last week, and he told me about a trip this weekend that Roberts and other Oak Cliff Transit Authority folks are taking with Fort Worth Avenue Development Group director Scott Griggs, Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce president Bob Stimson and other interested parties are taking to Portland, Ore.
Why Portland? Well, yes, I'm sure the weather is nice this time of year, but the point of the trip is to meet with the streetcar director of Portland. The city has "modern streetcars throughout," Roberts says, and CliffDwellers want to learn how they reinvented the rail. Portland's streetcars serve communities surrounding its downtown, and now boast 10,000 boardings per day. Wow. That's something to aspire to.
The Cliff Dweller does in Oak Cliff pretty much what Advocate Magazines does in the neighborhoods we cover with our other four magazines. And one of the things we do is a blog, which has been one of our readers’ favorite features.
